Monday Math Videos

Dear Students/Parents:

Hello everyone,

I hope all of you had a relaxing March Break! I just wanted to touch base with all students and their families given the situation we find ourselves in with schools currently being closed. Please know that we are all doing our best to provide whatever support we can during this difficult time. The Ottawa Catholic School Board has asked us to remind you that the health and well-being of our students and their families is our primary focus right now.  We are aware that everyone is dealing with their own unique situation and doing the best they can.

In terms of academics and “distance learning” at the present time, I will be making homework available to students through my blog as well as their folders in Google Drive. For those that have access to some learning resources, you can follow the directions given in order to continue learning the curriculum from home.

For Language, students can begin or continue reading a fiction novel of their choice that fits their individual reading level. I will be sharing independent novel study activities soon. The class has also been working on writing creative stories in Google Docs. They may finish these stories so we can share them with one another upon returning to school. The topic site is Scholastic Story Starters for anyone who has yet to choose a topic. These stories can be placed in the Language folders in Google Drive so I can have access to them.

For Mathematics, this week’s focus will be fractions and next week’s will be decimals. Mathletics will be assigned each week. I have already assigned the fraction tasks for this week and placed a work booklet in everyone’s math folder in Google Drive. Please go at your own pace. If you do not have a printer, do not worry about the practice sheets, focus on the posted videos and online practice. Students can also go on mPower and Mathagon (linked to the right) for extra practice. Khan Academy is also a very useful site which has great videos and practice questions that can be answered online.

The Ministry of Education has created a website to support students and parents - Learn at home. The link to this site is being provided to parents directly via School Messenger as one possible means of continuing learning during school closures. During the next two weeks, these resources can serve as useful websites.

Next math unit

After the March break, we will be starting a new math unit: Number Sense and Numeration, working with decimals, fractions and percents. If your child has workbooks or practice sheets at home, feel free to focus on the following areas.

Grade 5: 
- improper fractions and mixed numbers
- comparing and ordering decimal numbers to hundredths
- adding and subtracting decimal numbers to hundredths
- counting forward and backwards by 0.01
- whole number rates (proportional reasoning)

Grade 6: 
- improper fractions and mixed numbers
- comparing and ordering decimal numbers to thousandths
- adding and subtracting decimal numbers to thousandths
- relationships involving percent, ratio, and unit rates

Spelling words

Students will not be getting a new set of spelling words this week. They will get their new words on the Tuesday after the March Break.

Summer Skills Builder 2020

The summer school forms were sent home with SOME students today. I chose students who I thought would benefit from having some extra numeracy and literacy support this summer. 

The Summer Skills Builder is a free course that is taught at Holy Trinity High School (and some other high schools across Ottawa) for grades 6, 7, and 8, half days for 3 weeks in July. In this program, students receive encouragement, gain confidence, learn how to improve reading, writing, numeracy, study and organizational skills required for success.

If your child did not receive a form but you are interested in learning more, please do not hesitate to contact me and I can send one home to you.

Math test on Monday

The data management test on Monday will cover the following topics:

Grade 5: 

mean and mode
discrete and continuous data (knowing the difference)
collecting and organizing data into graphs (bar graphs and broken line graphs)
describing trends in a graph


Grade 6:

mean, median, mode and range
discrete and continuous data (knowing the difference)
collecting and organizing data into graphs (double bar graphs and continuous line graphs)
describing trends in a graph

Sample Questions:

1. The weekly salaries of six employees at McDonalds are $140, $220, $90, $180, $140, $200. 
For these six salaries, find: (a) the mean (b) the median [grade 6 only] (c) the mode (d) the range [grade 6 only]


2. Andy has grades of 84, 65, and 76 on three math tests.  What grade must he obtain on the next test to have an average of exactly 80 for the four tests? [grade 6 only]

3. Test scores for a class of 10 students are as follows:
93, 84, 97, 98, 100, 78, 86, 100, 85, 92 [grade 5 only]

a) Is this data discrete or continuous?
b) Display these results in a broken line graph.
c) What is the mean and mode?

4. Describe whether the following data sets would be considered discrete or continuous.
